Swami Vipulanandar
Vipulananda Adigal was born to Samithambiar and Kannammal in 1892, in Karerumudur in Sri Lanka.His original name was Mayilvahanan. He had his early education from his own father, maternal uncle and others such as Sivagurunatha Pillai, Kunjithambi and Vaithialinga Desikar. Later he studied in St. Michael's College, and at the age of 16, he obtained the first rank in the examination conducted by Cambridge University.
In 1920, he became the Principal of Hindu College. He started an association in Jaffna for the promotion of Tamil literature. He translated into Tamil some of the fine poems from other languages And also some poems of Geethanjali. In 1922, after the death of his friend Thiruvilangam, he decided to relinquish the world in order to give his complete attention to Saivism and Tamil Literature. He joined Ramakrishna Mission and left for Madras. In 1924, Swami Sivananda, after giving him suitable instructions, renamed him as Swami Vipulanandar (or Vipulanda Adigal). In 1925, returning to Sri Lanka he was instrumental in starting institutions like Sarada Vidyalayam and Sivananda Vidyalayam.
In 1932, at the desire of Vipulanandar, Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar started an University in Chidambaram, Vipulanandar accepted to be the Tamil Professor of this University. In 1933 he Gave up his job continued his great research of Yazh. He travelled to various places and collected a lot of materials. In 1943, he returned to Sri Lanka where, accepting the post of Tamil Professor in the University he contained to work for the development of Tamil Language and literature. The Release of "Yazh Nool".
After working tirelessly for 14years, Vipulananda Adigal was able to bring out his great work "Yazh Nool". In 1947 (June 20-21), this work in Isai Tamil was released under the auspicious Karanthai Tamil Sangam in the presence of scholars and musicians in the place called Thirukollampudur.
The flute maestro Thiruppampuram Swaminatha Pillar, T.S.Avinailingam Chettiar, R.P.Sethu Pillai, Somasundara Bharathiar, Swami Chitbavanandar, Professor Sambamoorthy, Vidwan Avvai Duraisami Pillai, Professor T.P. Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai Vidwan Vellaivarananar and Veenai Vidwan K.P. Sivanandam Pillai attended this releasing function.
Newly made instruments like Mulari Yazh, Sruthi Veenai, Parisatha Veenai and Chaturdandi Veenai were kept for exhibition. Veenai Vidwan K.P.Sivanandam Pillai played the ragams Sankarabharanam.Harikambhoji, Mayamalavagauli, Pantuvarali, Ganamurti,Gayakapriya, Dhavalambari etc., in both Parisatha Veenai and Chaturdandi Veenai; he also demonstrated the 7palais of Tamil Isai in Sruthi Veenai. All the scholars and musicians attending the function highly appreciated the great research of Vipulananda Adigal, the author of Yazh Nool. Vipulanandar returned to Sri Lanka where also a function was held to celebrate the release of his work. As a result of many travels and arduous work, he became weak and sick and was admitted in a hospital in Colombo. After some treatment he was taken to a resting-place. In the year 1949, at the age of 57, he had his last breath. His work and services for the cause of Tamil and Tamil Isai will always be remembered.
